Hip fracture in adults
Early surgery, the right implant, and orthogeriatric care.

Key points
- Operate on the day of admission or the day after.
- Displaced intracapsular fractures: arthroplasty (hemiarthroplasty or total hip replacement).
- Total hip replacement suits selected patients who were independently mobile and are fit for the procedure.
- Trochanteric fractures above and including the lesser trochanter: sliding hip screw; subtrochanteric fractures: intramedullary nail.
- Allow full weight-bearing immediately after surgery and start mobilisation the next day.
